If you want to start with a place that leaves a mark, start here. The Crypt of Santa Restituta, in the Stampace district, is one of those places that make you understand at once how many layers Cagliari has: over the centuries it has been a limestone quarry, a place of worship and even a shelter during the war. It is a strong, almost cinematic stop, and it has the advantage of being in an area that talks well with the historic heart of the city.

In the Marina district there is another stop that is really worth it: the Sant’Eulalia Archaeological Area. It runs for about 900 square metres under the historic quarter and tells of a Cagliari far older than the one you see walking on the surface. It is the right place if you want to move from the postcard city to the one you discover little by little.

Still in the Marina area, the Crypt of Santo Sepolcro adds another shade to underground Cagliari. You go in through a trapdoor in the middle of the nave, and the hypogeum is made of three barrel-vaulted chambers, with traces of frescoes and a very particular atmosphere. If you want somewhere less obvious but very evocative, this is one to note down.

After the underground, you need an open view. The Bastione di Saint Remy is one of the absolute symbols of Cagliari and holds inside it the covered walkway, the city’s historic drawing room on top of the old walls. It is the point where the walk changes pace: first the city hides, then it opens up.

Finished in 1307 to a design by Giovanni Capula, the same hand as the Torre di San Pancrazio. More than thirty metres of limestone over four floors, and above the gate the small marble elephant that gave it its name. When it is open you climb on foot, and from the top the Castello, the harbour and the gulf all fit into a single glance — which is why it was the lookout over the sea. Worth knowing: the city’s own pages flag closures for restoration, children under twelve cannot go up, and there is no lift. Check before you climb.

Five hectares in the Palabanda valley: work began in 1864, wanted by Patrizio Gennari and designed by Gaetano Cima. Inside there is the succulent desert, the palm grove, the Mediterranean scrub and the garden of medicinal plants — and under the plants there are still cisterns, wells and a Roman quarry, because the garden sits inside an archaeological area. A few steps away, cut into the rock of the Buon Cammino hill at the end of the 2nd century, the Roman amphitheatre held ten thousand people. It is the last stop because it is also the coolest: here you sit down.
If you want to go beyond the usual walk downtown and see Cagliari from another angle, the sea is certainly the right choice. That is where our partners’ experiences come in: two different ways of living the south coast, between coves, rest and freedom.
Sardinia is famous for its sea too, and here in Cagliari there are coves that really deserve to be seen from the water. With Boats in the Sea you can take a trip on a 9-metre rib with a 300 hp engine, with a skipper, through some of the finest parts of the south coast, with tours at 09:00–12:30, 14:00–17:30 and 18:30–21:00. Departure is from Molo Sant’Elmo, a few minutes from the centre.
